International Biodiversity Day - 22nd May 2024
Our planet is fragile and needs our care. Everyday actions we take add up to make a difference.
Marked on the 22 May each year, the theme for Biodiversity Day 2024 is "Be part of the Plan", a call to action for all stakeholders to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity. Everyone has a role to play and therefore can Be Part of the Plan. Biodiversity Day 2024 is also a chance to increase the visibility and momentum of the Biodiversity agenda in the lead-up to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 16), to be held in Colombia in October 2024.
As a way to play my part this Biodiversity Day, I am sharing my Biodiversity Collection, which was inspired by the (last) COP15 summit in late 2022. The research I undertook as part of this project, particularly around biodiversity loss in the UK, both shocked and saddened me.
The wildflowers around which the three pieces in this collection were conceived and named (Cotswold Pennycress, Red Helleborine & Twinflower) are amongst the most endangered in the UK. Hedgehogs, turtledoves, and bees that are featured in the collage of these mixed media pieces have undergone a dramatic decline. Since the 1970s, we have lost 95% and 98% of our hedgehog and turtledove numbers, respectively... and this is just one of the shocking statistics around biodiversity and habitat loss.
My intention with this collection is to raise awareness and create conversations and action around biodiversity. Every one of us can do our bit and there are lots of simple things you can do to help. From building a bug hotel to creating a garden pond, there are lots of ways that you can help. The Wildlife Trusts have put together a great list of ideas to help wildlife at home.
10% of proceeds from this collection will be donated to The Wildlife Trusts.
